New Methods for Ponding Analysis of Open Web Steel Joist Roofs

This webinar will review roof ponding requirements in the SJI 2015 Specifications, IBC 2015, ASCE 7-16, the International Plumbing Code (2015), FM Global and the AISC 2016 Specification. The recently improved SJI Roof Bay Analysis Tool will also be discussed. This tool assists the engineer in selecting the most economical joist bay configuration and now also determines the stability of the bay for roof ponding. The ponding analysis method implemented in the tool, in which loads are computed based on the deformed shape of the roof, are introduced and compared to traditional methods of assessment defined within the AISC Specification. Several analysis examples of roofs constructed with joists and Joist Girders will be presented. The presentation also includes photographs of roof failures with discussion as to why the collapses occurred.

Dr. James M. Fisher, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, Vice President Emeritus of Computerized Structural Design, received his BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, MS and Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Illinois. Jim taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before joining CSD Engineers in 1973. He has received numerous industry awards from ASCE, AISI and AISC including the T.R. Higgins Award, Lifetime Achievement Award and the Kimbrough Award. Jim is currently the Consulting Engineer to the Steel Joist Institute. He is a licensed Professional Engineer.

Mark Denavit, Ph.D., P.E., is an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Mark received his BS in Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and MS and PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Prior to his teaching position, Mark worked as a design engineer with Stanley D. Lindsey and Associates, Ltd. in Atlanta, GA. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Georgia.
