Joist and Deck in Lateral Load Systems

Steel joists, metal decks and fasteners are often components of wind or seismic lateral load systems. This webinar focuses on practical methods to introduce shear into the system; redistribution of shear within the diaphragm; and transfer of shear to collectors, frames or shear walls. Subtopics include rigid vs. flexible, strength vs. stiffness, and connection design.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review of traditional shear mechanics to determine reactions and shear flow.
  • Understand shear stiffness and recognize when demands are rigid, flexible or a compromise of both.
  • Understand component capacities and limitations of joists, decks and fasteners.
  • Use online tools to facilitate analyses and expedite diaphragm shear design.
