The project’s Engineer of Record will generally provide repairs for structural or miscellaneous steel that they specified; however, they will not provide repairs for specialty items because these items may include warranties that will be voided if altered without approval of the specialty supplier, such as joists and joist girders. These repairs are generally provided by the specialty supplier so that any warranty they provided is maintained. The project’s Engineer of Record does have the authority to effect repairs to these items; however, they may be unknowingly assuming the warranty for that product. Unfortunately, this can become a liability issue and is the reason engineers require the specialty items supplier provide the repair. Conversely, the specialty supplier does not want to provide a repair to a damaged structural component they did not design or supply.
