Join James M. Fisher, Ph.D., P.E., for a discussion on structural engineering design, lessons learned from practice and the role of engineering judgment in achieving successful projects. This interactive webinar will feature an open conversation where engineers, steel fabricators, steel detailers and steel erectors are invited to submit questions and participate in the discussion. Audience questions and comments will help guide the session, allowing participants to explore topics that are most relevant to their work and experience.

The discussion may include what constitutes good structural design, how successful designs are achieved and how engineering judgment influences decisions that extend beyond code provisions. Dr. Fisher will also address common misconceptions and myths related to structural design and construction.

This webinar is provided by the Steel Joist Institute. Participants can earn 1.5 PDHs.

James M. Fisher, Ph.D., P.E.

Dr. Fisher received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin after which he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers from 1962 until 1964. He received his M.S. in 1965 and PhD. degrees in Structural Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1968. Dr. Fisher served as the Chairman of the AISC Specification Committee from 2003 until 2010. Dr. Fisher served as the Consulting Engineer to the Steel Joist Institute from 2003 until 2025.

Structural engineers, fabricators, detailers and connection design firms that are responsible for steel joist and joist girder building designs and their connections. Those with very little design experience as well as those with many years of experience will find the course beneficial.
