ASCE 7-22 Snow Loading Joist Designation

ASCE 7-22 introduced significant changes to snow and rain load provisions, including new reliability-based load combinations that affect open web steel joist designations. This video explains how the updated ASD and LRFD load combinations compare to previous editions and what those changes mean for joist specification and serviceability requirements.

Using a practical example from Reno, Nevada, the presentation reviews the four common joist designation options: standard SJI joists, load-per-foot designations, KCS joists, and special (SP) joists. The video also clarifies the responsibilities of the specifier and joist manufacturer for load combination analysis and deflection checks under each option.
