Project Description

The Salomon CenterThe Salomon Center, aka Gold’s Gym/Fat Cat’s, is a multi-purpose center offering a mix of dining and entertainment, not to mention a few ways to burn off those dining calories, after the fact. Anchoring the new downtown area for the city of Ogden, named #3 in Outside Magazine’s 20 Best Towns in America (August 2008), the Salomon Center offers visitors: iFly-indoor skydiving, FLOWRIDER-indoor surfing, iRock-indoor rock-climbing (55 ft. wall), a 32-lane bowling alley, indoor bumper cars & arcade, 3-dining options, and the Gold’s Gym ranked 2008 Best Gym in the Northwest, Best Gym in the USA, and Gold's Gym of the Year, all on a footprint of just over 60,000 sq. ft.

What Makes This Project Interesting

This building was built as an indoor show-piece for an amazing outdoor community. The unique nature of attractions offered within the structure required a structural system that could be both useful and attractive, when left exposed to all the customers. The “open-air” feel of the open-web joists allow for just the right feeling, in an indoor space built to showcase the outdoors.

Steel Joists used in the Salomon Center projectAdvantages Of The Chosen Structural System

What were the advantages of the chosen structural system? One major advantage to using a joist and joist girder system was the ability to span large open gymnasium spaces, and hang a very heavily used running track, both while allowing for the attractive, open-structure look Gold’s Gym was going for.

Project Scope

The overall scope of the “Salomon Center” included first tearing down a 2-city-block mall, which had, over the years, run into disrepair. Afterwards, the city spend the better part of two deciding upon and developing the idea for an “open-air” mall, consisting of several restaurants, a movie theatre, condominiums, office space, and of course, the Salomon Center, all within that same 2-block area. The Salomon Center was a ground-up new construction.
