The design and construction of the a new High Temperature Hot Water piping system serving the entire South Woods Prison site in Bridgeton, NJ utilized steel joist construction for economy and flexibility.

Advantages of the chosen structural system include lower material costs and design costs. Specifying and utilizing steel joists to support the HTHW pipe spanning over roadways, service areas and the gates in security fence was more economical than designing and fabricating small truss bridges for these locations. The production and supply of the steel joists allowed for a shorter construction schedule and shorter design schedule.

The project is for a local fire station and social hall for the town of Brunswick, MD and the surrounding community. The project is comprised primarily of bowstring joists with extended top chords that extend out over the exterior walls up to 10’0″ in some locations. The longest of the bowstrings is approximately 120’0″, including the extended top chords.

This building was built as an indoor show-piece for an amazing outdoor community. The unique nature of attractions offered within the structure required a structural system that could be both useful and attractive, when left exposed to all the customers.
