Description

The 2022 editions of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and the ASCE/SEI 7 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures include significant changes relevant to design for ponding. Most importantly, the appendix included in previous editions of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings that described methods of ponding analysis has been removed and the definition of rain load has been revised to be based on the deflected shape of the roof. The new provisions require a more realistic evaluation of the effects of ponding that is consistent with other aspects of structural design, but one that may be unfamiliar to design professionals. The goal of this presentation is to introduce design professionals to the new provisions for design for ponding of roofs constructed with structural steel, open web steel joists, and Joist Girders.

This in-depth webinar is sponsored by the Steel Joist Institute (SJI) and participation will earn you 1.5 PDHs.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Recall the main roof ponding requirements from ASCE/SEI 7-22.
  • Describe the limitations of the method of ponding analysis given in Appendix 2 of the 2016 AISC Specification.
  • Investigate the stability of simple roof systems for ponding using the SJI Roof Bay Analysis Tool.
  • Identify the main factors influencing the ponding stability of open-web steel joist roofs.
