Description
The Steel Joist Institute supported the American Institute of Steel Construction development of Design Guide 35 Steel-Framed Storm Shelters. The Design Guide is based on the ASCE/SEI 7-16, the 2016 edition of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, the FEMA P-361, the ICC 500, the 2016 edition of the SJI Standard Specification Load Tables and Weight Tables for Steel Joists and Joist Girders, and the 2007 edition of the SJI Standard Specifications for Composite Steel Joists, Weight Tables and Bridging Tables.
Design Guide 35, Steel-Framed Storm Shelters outlines design requirements for steel-framed storm shelters and safe rooms that are needed in schools and other critical occupancy buildings during high-wind events such as hurricanes and tornadoes. The guide presents information regarding code requirements and load criteria and also covers topics such as building envelope and framing system considerations. Design examples are also included. This guide was a joint effort of AISC, AISI, MBMA, SDI, SFA, STI, SJI.
