Longspan steel joists on top of long structural trusses frame the roof of this multi-purpose arena, home of the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders. The facility will host around 150 events annually. The structural system needed to limit the roof deflection, while also keeping the roof structure as light as possible. The joists were provided with a special zinc rich primer, and the joist deliveries were coordinated to go directly “to hook” due to the congested jobsite.

Recreation

The Kalahari Resorts Expansion project is located in Pocono Manor, PA. This job featured 550 tons of joists. The steel joists were of great advantage on this project as they spanned 185′ long, eliminating the need for interior columns in the convention center.

First, the size of the joists were notable as many were 72 in deep and over 100 ft long with special top chord geometry. The project required shop-applied special Tnemec paint by the joist manufacturer.

The new construction features a 30,000sf column-free space for use as the region’s largest ballroom which can be subdivided into smaller rooms or used in its entirety. Flexibility was the key in configuration of ceiling systems, lighting, HVAC and acoustics.
