This project utilizes steel joists and joist girders to create a roof structure to support solar panels over the top level of a parking garage. A system of joists and joist girders were erected, light gauge support angles were attached across the joists and the solar panels were attached to the light gauge support angles. Because the system is exposed to the weather, all of the joists and joist girders had to have a galvanized finish.

The joist and joist girder system provides an efficient means of supporting the solar panels while limiting the required number of supports and the overall steel tonnage required and minimizing the number of columns required to maintain an open space below.

Gerald Ford Int’l. Airport Parking Deck Roof

Since the original construction in 2011, this airport has never used the top parking deck during the winter. With the growth of air travel, the airport wanted to cover the top level without entirely closing the sides. For long-term protection, along with the structural steel, the final design required all the steel joists & bridging to be galvanized.

Airport Ballroom Expansion

This project included the addition of a ballroom and improved food service preparation areas to be completed for the 2014 Super Bowl. 60DLH joists up to 70 ft long created the roof for the structure and also supported a complex system of loads below.

In an effort to create a more organic feel, open-web bowstring joists were utilized to keep an open feeling beneath canopies, while creating architectural interest. Bowstring trusses were also used on the interior roof structure, in order minimize construction costs while matching the profile of the more costly tube steel trusses, on the exterior of the structure.
